A Baby Boomer's Tribute to The Four Tops

This blog post is dedicated to Levi Stubbs--former lead singer of The Four Tops. Levi passed away this morning at the age of 72. Published reports say he died peacefully in his sleep.

Stubbs was born in Detroit on June 6 1936 into a family with a strong musical tradition. The soul singer Jackie Wilson was a cousin, and his brother Joe Stubbs sang with the Detroit R&B group the Falcons.

Between 1964 and 1968 the Tops enjoyed 12 Top 20 American hits, including I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honeybunch), It's The Same Old Song and Bernadette. This is one of my favorites by the group. Tell me yours in this special tribute:

***A special note*** this video was shot in 1966---

Such good music! My favorite: Baby, I Need Your Loving. Thanks for including the video, fun to remember and I couldn't help but shake it up a bit while listening.

Rest in Peace, Levi Stubbs.

How can time go by so fast? I love the Four Tops. It's hard to believe it has been 40 years since those good ole days.

Oh I am so sorry to hear this! I loved listening to...and watching..the Four Tops. They moved in as much harmony as they sang. What a loss.

It was sad news to hear. Oddly enough, though I love the Four Tops songs, my thought immediately went to his playing the part of Audrey the flower in Little Shop Of Horrors; how crazy is that? He'll be missed.

I had no idea. They were great! I loved their synchronization of dance and hand movements when they sang!

72 is still quite young but at least he went peacefully. Must have been a shock to his family though. Thanks for sharing.
